DH opens consultation on transfer of HAC register to HPC
The Government intends to close the Hearing Aid Council and transfer the responsibility for registering Hearing Aid Dispensers to the Health Professions Council at the end of March 2010. The Department of Health has opened a consultation on the proposed draft legislation. We will be holding a number of public meetings to explain the plans. The next will held at Queen Margaret University, Edinburgh on April 23rd at 10am. Consultation on introducing HPC compliant CPD standards from 1st April 2009 – CLOSED 31 JAN 2009

Following the consultation the Council decided to:
- Adopt the HPC’s CPD rules.
- Carry out an audit of 2.5% of registrants in the summer of 2009 to check compliance for the 2007-9 period against the old CPD rules. Those dispensers who declared on their 2009 retention form that they did not get enough CPD points during 2007-9 and have submitted an action plan to make up the shortfall within 3 months will also be checked.
- Carry out a supportive check of progress towards meeting the new standards in December. We would ask 5% of people to demonstrate what CPD they have doing and how it meets the new standards. This would be for period April 09 – Dec 09 roughly. The only people we would be very concerned about are those who have done nothing at all. Otherwise we will be offering support to registrants on areas where they might want to improve and working with the industry to share findings.
